99 Luftballons

Written by Jörn-Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen and Carlo Karges for Nena's 1983 self-titled album, this West German neue deutsche welle song became the band's only US hit on the Billboard Hot 100. An English-language version titled "99 Red Balloons" with lyrics by Kevin McAlea was released in 1984, but in the US only the original German-language recording charted despite the English version's different lyrical meaning.
