Released as Procol Harum's debut single on 12 May 1967, this song reached number 1 in the UK Singles Chart and stayed there for six weeks, while reaching number 5 in the US. Written by Gary Brooker, Matthew Fisher, and Keith Reid, it has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and became one of the anthems of the 1967 Summer of Love. In 2009, Fisher won his battle to be recognised as co-writer of the music in a unanimous ruling from the Law Lords.
