Don McLean's 1971 folk-rock epic runs over eight minutes and chronicles the evolution of rock and roll from the 1950s through the early 1970s. The song's cryptic lyrics reference the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper in a 1959 plane crash, called "the day the music died."
