Del Shannon emerged from Michigan in the early 1960s with a distinctive sound featuring his self-invented musical instrument, the Musitron. His 1961 song "Runaway" topped charts internationally and established him as a major rock and roll artist. Shannon continued recording throughout the 1960s with hits like "Hats Off to Larry" and later worked with producers including Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty.
