Dick Dale

Dick Dale, born Richard Monsour in Boston in 1937, developed his distinctive guitar sound in Southern California during the early 1960s. Known as the "King of the Surf Guitar," Dale combined reverb-drenched electric guitar with Middle Eastern musical influences from his Lebanese heritage. His aggressive, staccato picking technique and use of heavy gauge strings created the raw, powerful sound that became the template for surf rock instrumental music.
