M.I.A., born Mathangi Arulpragasam in London, emerged in the mid-2000s blending hip-hop, electronic music, and global sounds influenced by her Sri Lankan Tamil heritage. Her 2007 album "Kala" featured "Paper Planes," which sampled the Clash and became a major international hit. M.I.A. brought politically charged lyrics and diverse musical influences to mainstream alternative and electronic music throughout her career.
