Written by John and Michelle Phillips, "California Dreamin'" was released by the Mamas & the Papas as a single in December 1965. The song was certified three-times platinum by the RIAA in June 2023, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001, and ranked number 420 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list in 2021.
