Written by David Bowie as the lead single to his 1973 album Aladdin Sane, "The Jean Genie" was recorded with his backing band the Spiders from Mars and co-produced by Ken Scott. Bowie described it as "a smorgasbord of imagined Americana," with a protagonist inspired by Iggy Pop and a title alluding to author Jean Genet.
