Written by Jonathan Cain, Steve Perry, and Neal Schon for Journey's seventh studio album Escape, this song was released in October 1981 and recorded in one take at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California. In 2012, it became the best-selling digital track from the twentieth century with over seven million downloads by 2017, and in 2022, it was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry.
