Ray Stevens' 1970 recording spent two weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and three weeks atop the Adult Contemporary chart, with the opening featuring children from Oak Hill Elementary School in Nashville singing "Jesus Loves the Little Children." The song earned Stevens the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1971 and represented a departure from his comedy recordings with its anti-racist lyrics including "We shouldn't care about the length of his hair/Or the color of his skin."
