"Everything Is Everything" was written by Lauryn Hill and Johari Newton for Hill's debut solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998), and released as the third single on May 3, 1999. The song marked the first commercial appearance of John Legend, who was 19 years old when he played piano on it, and peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. The music video was directed by Sanji, filmed in the Method Studios in Los Angeles, and depicted Hill walking throughout New York City.
