Both the BBC and the Independent Broadcasting Authority refused to play the song due to its controversial lyrics and cover, with the BBC imposing a total ban. It reached No. 1 on the NME charts and No. 2 on the official UK Singles Chart, leading to accusations that the charts had been fixed to prevent it from topping the list.
