Written by Deke Richards, Pam Sawyer, R. Dean Taylor, and Frank Wilson, this became the Supremes' 11th number-one single in the United States, selling 500,000 copies in its first week. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in late 1968, dethroning the Beatles' "Hey Jude" after its nine-week run. Diana Ross & the Supremes debuted the song on The Ed Sullivan Show on September 29, 1968, breaking ground with its then-controversial subject matter of illegitimacy.
