Written and performed by Billy Joel, "Piano Man" was first released as a single in the US on November 2, 1973, and is based on Joel's real-life experiences as a lounge musician in Los Angeles from 1972 to 1973. The song peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1974, and in 2015, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its "cultural, historic, or artistic significance."
