"Play That Funky Music" was written by Rob Parissi and recorded by Cleveland-based funk rock band Wild Cherry, released in April 1976 on the Sweet City label and distributed by Epic Records. The single hit number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Soul Singles chart on September 18, 1976, eventually selling 2.5 million copies in the United States alone and earning platinum certification for shipments over 2 million.
