Written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley over the phone in one day specifically for the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, the song features a spoken introduction and was sung by Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. The song wasn't popular upon initial release, but gained recognition when the film began appearing on television reruns in the 1980s, and in the week following Wilder's death in 2016, it rose in streams and sales by more than 1000%.
