Written and originally recorded by Otis Redding for his 1965 album Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul, this soul track became a crossover hit before Aretha Franklin transformed it into her signature feminist anthem in 1967. Franklin's version earned two Grammy Awards in 1968, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1987, and was honored by the Library of Congress in 2002 by being added to the National Recording Registry.
