Richard III
Released in March 1997, "Richard III" reached number two on the UK Singles Chart, matching Supergrass's peak position from "Alright" / "Time" in 1995. Written by Gaz Coombes, Rob Coombes, Danny Goffey, and Mick Quinn, the song's title came from the band's method of giving songs working titles using people's names—this being the third called "Richard"—with the Shakespeare reference to the dark and evil king matching the song's menacing tone despite neither the king nor the play being mentioned in the lyrics.
