Space Oddity
"Space Oddity" was written by David Bowie and first released on 11 July 1969, telling the tale of a fictional astronaut named Major Tom. The song was rush-released to capitalise on the Apollo 11 Moon landing and was used by the BBC as background music during its coverage of the event, initially reaching number five in the UK and later becoming Bowie's first UK number-one in 1975.
