Hozier wrote and recorded this debut single in the attic of his parents' home in County Wicklow while struggling as a musician. The black-and-white music video, directed by Brendan Canty, Emmet O'Brien and Conal Thomson, follows a romantic relationship between two men and a violent homophobic attack. The song spent 23 consecutive weeks atop the Hot Rock Songs chart and peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 2014.
