Written by Hank Ballard and originally released in 1958, Chubby Checker's 1960 cover reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 twice—first in September 1960 and again in January 1962, a feat not repeated until Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" in 2020. Billboard declared it the "biggest hit" of the 1960s and held the top position on their all-time Hot 100 singles list from 2008 until September 2020.
