Written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, the lyrics were inspired partly by T. S. Eliot's poem The Waste Land and concerned with class and inner-city life in London. The song was first produced by Bobby Orlando in 1984, then re-recorded with Stephen Hague for their debut album Please.
