Released as the lead single from Janet Jackson's third album Control in January 1986, this song was co-written by Jackson with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, originally penned for their own records but rewritten to express Jackson's feelings about her separation from James DeBarge. The music video, directed by Brian Jones and Piers Ashworth with choreography by Paula Abdul, shows Jackson at a diner discussing relationship problems with friends and won a Soul Train Music Award in 1987. The song peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Hot Black Singles chart.
