Written by Prince for the Purple Rain film to match a segment involving his character's parental difficulties and love affair with Apollonia, "When Doves Cry" was his first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, staying there for five weeks. According to Billboard, it was the top-selling single of 1984 and is certified Platinum by the RIAA. The music video, directed by Prince, premiered on MTV in June 1984 and opens with white doves emerging from double doors to reveal Prince in a bathtub.
