Written by Jimmy Webb for Glen Campbell, who recorded it backed by members of the Wrecking Crew in 1968, this song has been called "the first existential country song". Rolling Stone's 2021 list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" ranked it at number 206, while Bob Dylan considered it "the greatest song ever written" and British music journalist Stuart Maconie called it "the greatest pop song ever composed".
