Written by Bono, Adam Clayton, The Edge, and Larry Mullen Jr., "With or Without You" was released on 16 March 1987 as the lead single from U2's fifth studio album The Joshua Tree. The song became U2's first number-one hit in both the United States and Canada, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks, and Rolling Stone ranked it 131st on its list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.
