Funky 4 + 1
Funky 4 + 1 formed in the South Bronx in 1978 and became one of hip-hop's earliest groups to gain wider recognition. The group consisted of four MCs—KK Rockwell, Keith Keith, Sha Rock, and Rahiem—plus DJ Breakout, with Sha Rock being one of hip-hop's first prominent female MCs. They released "That's the Joint" in 1980 on Enjoy Records, one of the early rap singles to reach beyond New York's underground scene.
