Tom Robinson Band formed in London in 1976, delivering politically charged rock during Britain's late-70s punk era. Their 1978 debut album "Power in the Darkness" featured the pub-rock anthem "2-4-6-8 Motorway" and the defiant folk-rock ballad "(Sing If You're) Glad to Be Gay," both built on melodic hooks rather than punk aggression. Robinson's confrontational lyrics about social issues and personal identity made the band a leading voice of Rock Against Racism. The original lineup disbanded in 1979, though Robinson continued his solo career.
