Written by Steve Winwood and Will Jennings with backing vocals by James Taylor, "Back in the High Life Again" was released in November 1986 as the fifth single from Winwood's fourth solo album. The song became Winwood's second number-one on the US Adult Contemporary chart where it stayed for three weeks, reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, and earned a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year in 1988.
