Derek Burbidge

Derek Burbidge shot promo films for British acts from the late 1970s, when the form was still closer to filmed performance than to concept. He became The Police's regular director — five of those videos are here, from Roxanne through Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic — and his Queen We Are The Champions was staged before an audience of fan club members at the New London Theatre in October 1977. He also made Gary Numan's Cars, an early piece of synth-era visual language, and he directed Urgh! A Music War, filmed across Paris, London, Los Angeles and New York in 1980, which caught dozens of punk and new wave acts on stage.
