Written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong, "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" was first released by Gladys Knight & the Pips in September 1967, reaching number two on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. Marvin Gaye's version, recorded in early 1967 but released in October 1968, went to number one on the Billboard Pop Singles chart for seven weeks from December 1968 to January 1969, becoming the biggest hit single on the Motown family of labels at that time.
