Vanessa Carlton wrote this song at age 17 in a single sitting, marking it as the first song she ever completed in one session. Released on July 1, 2002 from her debut album Be Not Nobody, the single peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100. When performing live, Carlton uses her original lyrics "If we walk now, we will divide and conquer this land" instead of the album's "Don't you see your dreams lie right in the palm of your hand?"
