"Rainy Days and Mondays" was written by Paul Williams (lyrics) and Roger Nichols (music) for the Carpenters' self-titled third album, released in April 1971. The song peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, kept from number one by Carole King's "It's Too Late"/"I Feel the Earth Move", and became the duo's fourth consecutive number-one single on the Adult Contemporary chart. The song was certified gold by the RIAA for 500,000 copies sold in the United States.
