Written by Jack White for The White Stripes' fourth album Elephant, "The Hardest Button to Button" was released on August 11, 2003, and reached number 23 on the UK Singles Chart. The music video, directed by Michel Gondry, uses pixilation animation to create the effect that numerous duplicates of their instruments appear with every beat, earning four nominations at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards.
