New York Dolls formed in New York City in 1971, playing a raw, high-energy brand of rock and roll that predated punk rock. Their self-titled 1973 debut album and 1974's "Too Much Too Soon" were commercial disappointments at the time but later recognized as highly influential. Though the original lineup dissolved by 1977, their blend of glam aesthetics with garage rock attitude inspired countless punk and alternative bands.
