Bee Gees

Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb were singing on television years before anyone made music videos, and the oldest clips on this page come from that world, among them "Words" on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1968. The director credits here name three people.

In 1977 Bruce Gowers filmed both "How Deep Is Your Love" and "Stayin' Alive". Gowers, a Scot, had made Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" two years earlier. "How Deep Is Your Love" is the simple one: the brothers sing while a stream of rainbow lights passes them. "Stayin' Alive" has nothing to do with Saturday Night Fever. It was shot on MGM's backlot in Culver City while the group were on the lot making the film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and it walks them past the studio's standing sets, among them the Grand Central Station set from The Band Wagon. The sculptor Andy Edwards took that walk as the inspiration for his statue of the brothers on the promenade in Douglas, Isle of Man, where they were born. Within two years Gowers had also made Rod Stewart's "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" and Michael Jackson's "Rock with You"; he later directed the live episodes of American Idol from its first season.

"Too Much Heaven" was the group's gift to UNICEF. In 1978 they announced at the United Nations that the single's publishing royalties would go to the fund, and in January 1979 they sang it at the Music for UNICEF Concert. The video was made by Martin Pitts, who remembered a day of preparation, one day of shooting and a whole orchestra around the brothers: "everybody in Miami, pop musicians, people from the symphony".

Ten years after Saturday Night Fever, "You Win Again" started the group's comeback. Its video was directed by Leslie Libman, who had made the Bangles' "Manic Monday".

Not every clip here is as old as its song. "Tragedy" topped the American chart in 1979, but the video shown here is an animated one the Bee Gees released on their official channel in November 2024.
